Once I was an accountant who was always being asked to write stuff (reports, emails, tricky letters) or read over stuff my colleagues had written. It took a while (10 years!) for it to sink in that I enjoyed the writing parts of my job better than the accounting parts. In fact, after 10 years I didn’t like the accounting parts much at all.
Then a mate told me about a job where you could GET PAID to write for businesses. Copywriting. I know right?
Goodbye accounting, hello copywriting
Once I realised there was a job for what I loved doing most, I took the leap into copywriting as a career. A copywriting course, a website and a great deal of enthusiasm set me on my way. Now, with a few years under my belt, I’ve notched up experience across a huge range of industries and written for all kinds of media.
I’ll be upfront, I haven’t had agency experience. I haven’t learnt my craft under the tutelage of successful ad gurus. But I’ve had over five years on the tools, working with website developers, graphic designers and countless marketing departments. Why is copywriting so important?
Your website is like a shop front in the biggest mall in the world. It’s so important to get the words and the message right. Drawing out what makes every business unique and writing website pages that convey these messages to the target market is a challenge I thrive on.
One of my favourite parts of my job is absorbing as much as possible about each industry and business in preparation to write about it. I like to think I have a knack for this.
